Curt Levis Obituary

Curt Albert Levis, age 93, passed away August 9, 2019.

Curt was an immigrant from Germany, who came to America when he was 12 years old. He grew up in Cleveland and was active with the Playhouse Square community theater. He was a Naturalized Citizen and a Veteran of the United States Navy. Due to bureaucracy, he had to sue the Department of Defense and Secretary of the Navy to have his naturalization papers returned after his honorable discharge. He delighted in telling that story to family and friends.

Curt received a BS from Case Institute of Technology, an MS from Harvard University and a PhD from The Ohio State University. He was a professor of Electrical Engineering at OSU. During this time he also was a consultant for NASA, obtained several patents for inventions and was a Director of the OSU ElectroScience Laboratory. After retirement he co-authored a textbook on wave propagation.

Curt enjoyed the outdoors, especially skiing - both downhill and cross-country, sailing, canoeing, biking and hiking. He was a founder of the American Youth Hostels (Columbus) Whitewater Canoe School. Music was also important to Curt, who sang in college and church choirs, as well as playing piano and recorder.

Curt was active in several churches. He helped lead the Stephens Ministries at two churches, was on committees about local hunger and affordable housing. While a very practical man in everyday life, he sought a higher meaning in his spiritual life.

Curt died from Dementia after several years battling the disease. He is preceded in death by his wife, Katy Levis, and his sisters, Agatha Kleinman and Eva Karnatz. Curt is survived by his children, Alan Levis, Linda Volkovitsch, and Susan Lirtzman, as well as many nieces and nephews and several grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held August 29th at 3:00 pm at Trinity United Methodist Church (1581 Cambridge Blvd., Columbus, OH 43212). In lieu of flowers, the family would be honored if you would make a donation to the Alzheimer's Association (Alz.org) in memory of Curt.
