Cyrus Wayne Banning, age 90, passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2022 in Granville, Ohio.
He was born in Los Angeles, California to the late Wayne and Elnora Banning. He grew up in Southern California, graduating from Glendale High School in 1950. He went on to earn a BA of philosophy from Harvard University in 1954. Cyrus served in the US Army from 1954 to 1957, part of this time stationed in Korea. He then continued his education, acquiring an MA (1961) and PhD (1965) in philosophy from the University of Michigan.
Cyrus was a professor emeritus of philosophy at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. During his tenure, he served as chair of the philosophy department and held many leadership roles. His greatest enjoyment, however, was in teaching and mentoring his many students over his greater than 30 year career.
In retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife Margaret and remained interested in lively discussion and intellectual endeavors. He is remembered for his sharp wit, wry sense of humor, and warm laugh.
Cyrus was predeceased by his son Geoffrey Banning.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Margaret (Newsom) Banning; his daughter, Julia Banning; his grandson, Michael Banning, MD; and numerous extended family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all.
A celebration of his life will be held at a future date. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Kenyon College, to Hospice of Central Ohio, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
