With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Thomas Dean Patton, age 77, family by his side, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Saturday, December 16, 2023, following complications after a fall. Longtime resident of Grandview and Worthington, beloved by all who knew him.
Born July 7, 1946, in Columbus, Tom attended Grandview Heights schools where he served as president of his 1965 graduating class. He was a 1969 graduate of Marietta College where he was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity. Tom worked at The Ohio State University Athletic Ticket Office for 25 years, upholding a longstanding loyalty to the football and basketball programs in particular, influenced by his father’s relationship as Head Team Physician of the OSU Athletic Department, 1946-1971.
Tom’s indomitable spirit enabled him to achieve respect, fulfillment and joy in his lifetime, largely overcoming the disabling polio that he contracted at age 7. He reveled in the outdoors, camped with his fellow Cub and Boy Scouts at Camp Lazarus and attended First Community Church’s Camp Akita and spent several summers at Camp Kawanhee, Weld, ME, where he also served as a counselor.
His adventurous forays into the wilderness with close friends included treks to Alaska and canoeing in Canada, and solo trips to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. Tom had a keen interest in the natural world, took pleasure in making his own flies and fly fishing as a longtime member of Rockwell Springs Trout Club. He enjoyed duck and goose hunting in Ohio and on the Eastern Shore. His waterfowl decoy collection was his pride and joy. He was a voracious reader on a vast variety of subjects and was an avid follower of Formula One racing.
Tom volunteered his time with various local charities including Riverside Methodist Hospital ICU and Ducks Unlimited.
Survived by his faithful Cocker Spaniel, Jeb; sister, Deborah Patton Cline (Christopher Cline); nephew T. Elliott Cline (JoAnna Cline); grandnieces Audrey Patton Cline and Lyla Jo Cline; nephew Evan C. Cline; sister-in-law, Mary Patton; nieces Shannon Heath Patterson, Seattle, WA; Lauren Elizabeth Patton Dodenhoff (Tim), Elizabeth City NC; Jaimee Patton (Paul Weaver), Columbus, OH; Sara Marie Patton, Columbus, OH; dear cousins, nieces, nephews and many, many cherished friends. Predeceased by parents Dr. and Mrs. Richard (Sally) Patton and brother J. Michael Patton.
A service of memory will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 26, 2024, First Community Church Burkhart Chapel, 1320 Cambridge Boulevard, Columbus, Ohio, The Reverend Jim Long officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in his memory to the First Community Church Foundation (FCchurch.foundation.org) or to Hospice at Riverside Methodist Hospital (foundation.ohiohealth.com). Arrangements by Cook and Son – Pallay Funeral Home and Crematory.
